Søren Wærenskjold and the Baloise Belgium Tour, they are the perfect fit. The Norwegian won the time trial in Beringen for the second year running. Is there more to come? “If I can follow the best riders in the Ardennes …”

A year ago, Wærenskjold held off Yves Lampaert in Beveren, in Beringen he was faster than Mathias Vacek. “Still, today’s time trial was a bit trickier. I felt good but didn’t find the right rhythm straight away. I tried to save as much energy as possible in the sharp corners. That way I had some extra in the second part of the time trial.”

Wærenskjold starts Friday’s second stage between Merelbeke and Knokke-Heist as leader. “I will definitely defend my leader’s jersey in the next stages. Whether there is something more in it this week? If I have the legs to follow the opposition in the fourth stage in the Ardennes… Last year it worked out reasonably well, but there is stiff competition. We’ll look at it stage by stage over the next few days and see where we end up.”
